126 IND CRANE OPERATOR QUALIFICATION PROGRAM FOR OVERHEAD ELECTRIC CRANES 

OVERALL OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this program is to ensure all persons required to operate overhead powered cranes for industry receive a standard training package before operating any cranes. Due to variations in local regulations and crane types, local customized input/approval will be required before the program
is presented on site.

DURATION: 2 Days - Basics and checkout on one crane, additional time required for additional cranes.
5 Days - To qualify and train local trainers to deliver program.

TRAINING GUIDELINES: This program is offered to assist employees and employers with compliance to the Occupational Health and Safety Act in their Province/State. The OSHA states: I. a competent person, or
II. a worker being instructed who is accompanied by a competent person The instruction to all participants will follow the same guidelines. However, due to the various and numbers of cranes in each work location the practical checkouts will vary accordingly. The instructor, in co-operation with site supervisors, will have the authority to tailor the delivery of the program to meet the work location requirements of each specific individual and crane type. Selection and qualification of cranes and crane operators: Local management in cooperation with the instructor will designate which cranes come under this training and who operates the local cranes. The local procedure will be part of program content.

PROGRAM CONTENT:

I. Be familiar with the provisions of the OSHA and regulations that apply to your cranes to be operated at your work place.

II. Acquire knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health and safety as it pertains to the cranes in your work place.

III. To outline to you your responsibilities while operating the crane.

IV. To describe to you the responsibilities of the other personnel involved in the hoisting operation.

V. To make you aware of various unsafe rigging practices so you can identify any unsafe rigging arrangements from various diagrams and explain the reasons why these are unsafe.
Note: This is to enable you, as a crane operator to make a decision from your position in the crane or at the floor controls as to whether a load is rigged safety to lift. This does not entitle you to select rigging equipment or be responsible to rig loads for hoisting. A separate program called BASIC RIGGING is designed for that purpose.

VI. To identify all visible defects in given slings, eye bolts, shackles and hooks.

VII. To identify and give the function of the major component parts of a given overhead crane.

VIII. To demonstrate the safe method for normal entry and exit of a given overhead crane.
IX. To demonstrate the approved emergency escape from an overhead crane procedure using the controlled descent device provided for the crane being operated.

X. Using clearly visible approved international hand signals to direct the movement of an overhead crane to pick up and move a load from one location to another.

XI. To control the movement of an overhead crane responding to approved international hand signals to smoothly pick up and move a load from one location to another.
